pieced a 350 together and having problems!

ok well a friend and i are working on one of our friends camaros and he threw a rod. long story short he wanted to use his top end and get a used short block.i knew that it was a bad idea but whatever he wants, he has the money. so we get it done and fire it up. runs good, for maybe 10 sec. then it starts blowing whit smoke and coolant out of the tailpipes. what do you think it is?
i think is the heads!?!

Well, it's coolant/coolant smoke/steam.

Could be a junk head, bad head gasket, poorly sealed intake manifold, or a bad block!

Were the heads redone before putting on? checked for being flat? checked for cracks? And so on.

Just "tossing them on" is not a good idea, as you have found out. Guess it's time to pull it apart and see what happened.

Mark

coolant in exhaust

Well when you say threw a rod, I am assuming it went through the block knocking a hole in the wall.
It could have got too hot and warped a head

could be an improper torqueing sequence caused a bad seal.

I guess like Jmark said its possible its the intake, but my money is on the heads.

I had a 350 do the same thing after overheating cuz of a rotted freeze plug going down the hwy, By the time I saw the temp gauge it was to late. Tore it down, new rings, new bearings, new gaskets, back together for 20 mins and the head gasket blew in 4 spots. The top and bottom of #1 and #7 cylinder, took the head to have it checked and sure enough it was warped so both ends were sticking up. Needless to say, I check AALLLLL my heads now for straightness before installation.
