Post Pinion pre-load??

When putting the pinion shaft and bearings back in my Chevy 10 bolt rear end, do I measure the pinion preload before I stick the carrier back in? What torgue should it take to turn it?
Thanks
Tom

you measure pinion bearing load with the pinion only in the carrier, a shop manual will give you the specs, use an inch lb. torque wrench and measure rolling torque. this just locates the bearings and allows no end play.
