pinion too shallow

I had one shop look at it today and he said it looked like the pinion was too shallow due to too many shims under the bolts holding the pinion secure (whatever that thing is called) does this sound like it could be my whine?

Yes, definitely wrong setup!!!

Your ring and pinion are probably ruined. The trash in the lube is from the gear edges clashing into each other. This tears pieces of material from the surface and contaminates the lube. Lube circulates the particles thru the bearings and you have ONE BIG MESS! Get the guy who set it up!!
