piston and rod problems

We have an engine that blew a head gasket and filled the some of the cylinders with water. I tore the engine down had the block cleaned and checked and the pistons wasnt floppy on the rods. I soaked the pistons and rods in diesel for a week and worked them them once a day and sprayed them them with wd-40. I never disassembled them but they freed up. So i rebuilt the shortblock but never fired it. Is it safe since the pistons flopped around on the rods
