Pitman Arm

I have an 83 Chevy Silverado, 350. Put a new steering gear box on. Not sure how far the pitman arm is supposed to up on the new box, and what tool I am supposed to use to get it that far. I have checked the Haynes manual, and they tell you how to take it off and simlply say, "reinstall is the reverse procedure". Which is true but doesn't help me in this case.

With clean splines properly aligned, all it takes is torquing the nut correctly to secure the pittman arm- the splines are tapered. You might have an indexed spline- where a spline is missing- that correctly orientates the pittman, because it will only go on one way.

If the nut's 1-5/16", the torque is 180 ft/lb. I've always run them down w/an impact wrench- but I cannot suggest you do the same.

Hey thx for the info man, I think mine could stand to go up a little further, the threads of the new gear box aren't even exposed right now, and I cleaned the pitman splines before putting it on the new steering box....on a side note have you ever had an issue with power steering fluid leaking from the pressure line where it connects to the into gearbox? mine is leaking from the point where the metal line goes into the threaded part of the hose, I have tightened it as hard as I think I can get it.

Be sure the pittman is correct for the truck- the manual arms are smaller- but so much so that I doubt you'd mistake one for the other. But double check the part to be sure it's not mis-boxed or something.

AFA leaking hoses, if there's leakage even w/the correct tightening, about all that's left is replacement, unless it's a type of flare that can be redone along w/a fresh fitting.
