Plasma welder?

I was reading a welding book and they talked about a plasma welder. It showed a tip that looked just like a TIG torch and said because it was plasma tip to material distance was not as critical as TIG welding, also no tungston in the weld it you bump the surface while welding. I tried an internet search to see if I could find more info but only saw industrial machines.
Is there a smaller hoem owners version? Just wondering because I was thinking of getting a TIG before long and thought this might be an altenative.

I have never seen a hand plasma welder. I have plasma welders at work but the units are very large. Check the AWS (american welding society) site. It seems possible. It would be hard to beat the quality of a TIG weld.

Plasma is typically an industrial process because of cost. Parts and pieces are very expensive. There are both hand and robot torches available. The ones I've seen work off a conventional welder as a power supply but the controller and torch list for about $5000.
Not exactly the route for the average welder.
I bought a controller at an auction last year for a very good price but, until I find a similar deal on a torch, I can't afford to even play with it. I'm kind of a machineaholic but, unless you are doing aerospace work, there isn't a real need for plasma welding.
