please help with corvette steering prob

I was just given an '87 corvette coupe that has been parked for over a year and has become rather "stale". It has a few problems that need to be addressed before I can begin driving it. The biggest one is a problem with the steering. When I drive it the steering seems to be very stiff as I begin to turn the wheel and then jumps like its breaking free from a bind or power steering fluid begins to flow. It would best be described as jerky and unpredictable. I have several ideas as to what this might be but wanted to check with people who really know whats going on before I begin to tear into it. The car has 150K miles on it but has been maintained fairly well. emphasis on fairly

I had the same problem with my camaro but since the system was in such bad shape I rebuilt/replaced the whole thing. Only cost me about $200. I was thinking it was the pump being gunked up that was causing the problem but I cant know for sure since I replaced everything at once. I guess I would start with bleeding the old fluid out and checking for proper belt tension.

I don't think the pump has ever been flushed or replaced. I'm sure it would probably be more worthwhile to just replace it. Couldnt be that expensive and with 150k miles its just a matter of time. It did have a slight whine to it but had plenty of fluid.
