Please help I am in Checkball Hell

I am reassembling my 1989 700r4. I am at the point where I'm putting the check balls back in place. I have them all in place but one. One stinking ball. I have them one accounted for in the Aux Valve body so I know it doesn't go there and I have them all accounted for in the valve body and the case. The one thing I think I see is an issue in the case with a retainer.

In the ATSG manual, page 104, Figure 188 (See Attached) it shows a "Retainer and Ball Assembly" (Double Orifice) #106. I looked in this location and do not see a check ball. I see the Retainer but no check ball. The retainer looks damaged so I assume that the checkball was able to get past the retainer and out of the case.

So my question is.
#1 Should I be able to see a check ball under this retainer?
#2 Do I need to put in a new retainer?
#3 If I don't need to put in a new retainer I assume that I just put the check ball past the retainer and then try and bend the retainer out a touch to keep the ball from slipping past?

Also, in the Paul Zank video he recommends not using the big checkball in the case at the "Part Throttle/Drive 3" location. The Trans go kit I installed does recommend this. Should I put this ball back in place?

Thanks
Deon

Thanks guys.

OK, I noticed that this check ball and retainer are in the same system as the reverse piston. I bet when I used the compressor to blow out the piston that I blew the ball past the retainer.

So, question, does the ball sit below the retainer or does it sit within the retainer? If it sits within the retainer I would assume that the staked sides of the retainer is what holds it in place.?.?.?

IF i understand the photo....the check ball in the case as pictured... leave it out. This ball works on the reverse circuit.

I usually punch the whole retainer out..... I build performance units not daily driver soft shift stuff.

Many kits suggest leaving out the larger check ball from the case. This is the fail safe ball for TV cable miss adjustment , broken cable , etc

55g can be left out tooo. near the 4th gear accumilator

Crosley, can you say "Soft Shift Stuff" 10 times fast?

You tangled me all up reading that.

1989 700 R4

If it is a stock vehicle and you don,t want any complaints pick a capsule at the Dealer and reinstall the large check ball. They didn,t put it there for nothing.
