"Something that would work" Call Jet Performance and tell them what you have and they will build a Quadrajet that meets the needs.

The information that I found for carb #7043263 (J202 is date code of Oct 20, 1972) is that it is a carb that was used on '73 & '74 400 cu. in. engines.

Rebuilt carbs HERE , any parts house will sell you a rebuild kit- give them the car's make, model and the Rochester Q-Jet carb number 7043263. Cost for a kit is about $15-$20.

Its not the original carb, from the info you supplied, its for a 1973 400 pontiac. Your friends carb has a build date of October 1972, so its not possible for it to be original, somewhere over the past 35 years, its been swapped out. No big deal unless he's showing it at concours type events.
