Please help….

The victim is a 94 Chevy Suburban, with 160,700 miles, 350 tbi, 4l60e and completely stock. Just picked it up about 2 months ago and surprise the tranny is gone. Since I plan on towing about 7000#, (a couple times per year) I was looking for a tranny that will hold up. Could you guys recommend an online store? I found Pro-Built Automatics online but don’t know much about them.

I’ve never rebuilt a tranny before, but is it really difficult? I’ve rebuilt to small blocks in the past but was thinking that with both ATSG rebuild book and technical dvd, I’ll be able to rebuild it myself.

Or for you local guys, could you recommend a good transmission shop in south Florida, I prefer Dade or Broward County but willing to go to Palm Beach county if I have to.

So far I’ve been to 3 shops and I’m not impressed. 2 of them are asking $1000, the 3rd on wouldn’t even tell me. I asked for a price on a complete rebuild and he tells me…he has to look at it first.

With R&R, $1000 sounds reasonable these days.

Yep what Poncho said, I had a guy here tell me $1200 for a bench job, for those that don't know, thats when YOU pull the trans., take it to him and when its rebuilt YOU re-install it.

I have known him for over 30 years,very honest and very well versed in his trade.

Not sure about your proximity to his shop but you won't have any regrets about making the drive.

astro, I am familiar with Pro Built. I have done business with Dana. He is very knowledgeable about the 4L60E as well as other transmissions. I built my own 4L60E in my 95 Z28 with a parts kit I bought from Dana. Give him a call. He takes the time to talk to his customers and answer their questions. The best time to get in touch with him is after 6:00 pm pst.

Long story short.........Had the trans rebuilt in my 01 Tahoe at 53K. Told the shop (who has built 4 transmissions for me) that while he was in there, make sure I can tow my car trailer with a full size car or truck without any trouble. Just pulled a 6000 lb load this past weekend. Had no trouble at all. Cost me about 1400 bucks. You'll get what you pay for, but get the best and eliminate future problems.

I've been looking around on possibly rebuilding it myself. Not sure what I'm goinna do.....

I've never purchased a complete transmission from them but I've had good luck with Transmission Specialties TQ converters and other parts.

Getting close to doing the rebuild....
Now I need a converter. The SUV will be used for long trips and occasionally tow about 3000 to 5000# max. Some have recommended Dacco, Fuddle, Pro Torque and Yank(too expensive for my application) Could you guys recommend one. All stock motor, will bolt on headers, exhaust, ignition and mod the tbi. 10 bolt rear end with 3.42.......

The one thats in there went 160,000

rather than deal with local mom and pop shops(and people that can't give you a "cost not to exceeed" estimate) on the most common trans made, and/or online retailers why not Buy GM's Goodwrench SRTA

nobody will give you warranty like the one offered through your local GM dealer I heard that GM powertrain has extended the nation wide 36 month 50K mile warranty to 5 years and 100K miles

I purchased a new pioneer flex plate, and two cans of aerosol trans cooler flush plus fluid and had my Local Mechanic buddy do the install he charged me two hours labor
plus 55.00 for the flexplate, which had several hairline cracks around the bolt circle be [b]sure to inspect your flexplate

Called different dealers and the price was from $1600 to $2200 plus $350 core. So far I found on builder locally who I might go with. He has a good price and warranty, some people have also recommended him. Now I'm looking for a transmission cooler.
