pontiac 2t2 rear end

I have a housing and axles from a 66 Pontiac 2t2. The casting # on the housing is 9778080. I cant seem to find any info on this housing anywhere? I am looking for a posi unit i thought it would be 8.2 but someone told me its larger than that for this housing. Can anyone tell me what size posi units these came with and where can i buy one? Thanks any help would really be appreciated.

You will have to check swap meets and collectors to find something like that. I doubt that anybody makes parts for that rear end. I've seen parts at swap meets.

IIRC, your "P" diff has a 8-7/8" (8.875") ring gear, a 10 bolt cover w/12 bolts holding on the ring gear. Might be 31 spline.

I seem to also remember other makes inside GM (possibly Buick and Caddy) also used this rear end, or a variation of it.

Hi Freddie.....I see you are on here too. Busy guy what with Teams Chevelle and Camaro too.
I have a '66 8.2 posi and gears that Richard is interested in but mine are from a GTO. The only reply I got on Performance Years was that the b-body has a 8.875 12 bolt with 31 spline axles versus 28 on a 10 bolt. Richard has a 10 bolt rear cover with 31 spline axles. Did this particular axle actually have the larger, 12 bolt, carrier and gears ?
We're hoping to persuade an indepth reply here as we're both trying to learn from this and Richard in particular so he knows what to look for since mine doesn't seem to be correct.

Thanks for your time...

I actually do 11 sights like this every day. Some days I add a few more.

I wish I had more experience with this rear end. All I know is that I have seen the parts for them at some swap meets, but I haven't been into them. I have parts of an old full size GM rear end with 31 spline axles that came out of a Pontiac or Buick that I picked up many years ago. I also have a Eaton Posi that came out of an old GM full size rear end that has 12 bolt holes and 31 spline axle gears, but I don't know what parts will interchange. I just haven't had anyone bring anything like this to me before.

Wow i guess this is not going to be easy to find a unit. lol Yes they are 31 spline axles so that is correct. I just want to be sure i find something that is going to fit properly. Thanks for the replies.

The different GM divisions used a number of different rear axles in the 1960s, and parts for these oddball units are tough to come by. Try Drivetrain Specialists or Gevo's for hard-to-find parts.

By the way, I suspect the car is a Pontiac 2 plus 2, not a "2t2".

Yes 2 plus 2 was just getting lazy. I'll try those suggestions . thanks

Do you have the gears that came out of it? Does the ring gear have 12 bolt holes? What is the ratio?

Hi no i don't have the gears i just picked up the housing someone was in the process of rebuilding it has new bushings in the mounts and was powder coated the caps are there and the axles. I know its a 66 or maybe 65 2 plus 2 rear end. I will try to find the two letter code it says its supposed to be on the back of the passenger tube but i did not see it there last night may have been filled in when he powder coated it. I'll see if i can wire wheel that area and find it. Thanks for your help.

There was another oddball rear a while back. This was an Olds rear, 4-link type. It had 12-bolt cover and Ring gear. He sent me a few Pics & it did have a Posi.>> 12 Bolt Olds Rearend With 12 Bolts On Ring Gear Pics are to large to upload without resizing tho'.

If you want to try this Eaton that I have I can send it to you, but it won't do you any good without gears. I don't have any idea where to get gears for this. I also don't know if this Eaton is a 2 or 3 series, or what it came out of.

I'll be honest, unless you need to use that housing for originality, you'll be dollars ahead to find a true Chevy 12 bolt than to try to piece that one together. If you must use it, be aware that buying those parts individually won't be cheap (unless you get lucky).

Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge, Freddie...and all the rest.
Richard I have a thread going about this on an all Pontiac site called Performance Years too. Here's a link if you care to follow along or register and participate.

Obviously what I have is NOT going to work for your application but I may have another source close by me. I need to do some digging for his contact info. He specializes in the 60's b-body Pontiacs.
