pontiac 400 tranny to an olds 307

my brothre bought a pontiac 400 trans to bolt behind his olds 307, but apparently its not capatible. What must be done to make it work and is it worth the trouble and money. The tranny was originally bolted to a 455 pontiac

If it's truely a 307 Olds engine it should bolt up without a problem. Olds,Buick & Pontiac use the same pattern. Chevy is different.
Is it possible it's a 305 Chevy engine? What vehicle is the engine in?
You can buy an adapter plate to bolt BOP to Chevy and Chevy to BOP.

If it really is a 400 from a Pontiac (or Olds, Buick or Caddy) it will fit.

If it's from a Chevy (will have a "peaked" bellhousing) it will not fit w/o a ~$75 adaptor.

The 400 has a different output spline/yoke, too. The driveshaft will need modification.

A much better trans would have been a "BOP" TH350, or whatever came behind the 307 Olds originally.

the engine is in a 85 cutlass and came out of a earlier year cutlass. Ill get numbers off engine to see if its a true olds 307. The originally tranny was slipping and it was the stock 200 metric.

Ok clarification, just talked to my brother and he said it did bolt up. The tranny is a long tail so drive shaft mods will have to be done. So now what?

The Olds engine will have an oil fill tube coming straight up from above the water pump in the front of the block. Also you can look on the driver's side for a head casting number, by the number one spark plug. Look for 5A, 6A or 7A. You might have to clean the heads to see the numbers.

Driveshaft will need to be shortened about 5-3/4", best to measure with suspension loaded.
Needs electric Kickdown switch for passing gear. Mounted on Carb or Gas Pedal Linkage under dash. Vacuum line for the Modulator.
Also a Trans Crossmember from a G-Body that came with a TH2004R will work.

78-81 Cutlass did come with the 305 Chevy engine as an option.
