pontiac 455 dipstick

How long should the dipstick measure on a 1970 Pontiac 455. I just bought one and changed the oil & filter (short). Poured in 6 quarts of oil and it only registers on the tip of the dipstick. Appears to be a stock oil pan????

How far up from the tip of the dipstick does the oil show? An eighth inch, a quarter inch, a half inch?

The "Pontiac" holds 6 quarts PLUS the filter. Very nearly 7 when it's actually full.

There are two sticks. One is the "short" one for non-A/C cars and the other is much longer, with an extension to the upper tube, for A/C cars. The engine displacement is of no concern, as all the Pontiacs of that era use the same sticks. The "short" one measures 18 1/2" from under the flange to the tip.

FWIW

Jim
