Pontiac engine pops

The engine is a 69 428 in my 66 Catalina convert. The engine starts fine with the choke wide open on the Qjet. It will continue to run until it gets warm with a few taps on the pedal. I have the points set to about 25 with factory calling for 30. I set them at 30 and it ran bad. I am getting some backfire "popping" through the exhaust. It is not regular but happpens often as it runs. It doesn't stop when the engine is warm. I have timing set to 12. The manual calls for 8 or 15 depending on the horsepower. I am not sure which I have so I set it for 12. It ran hot at 8. I also get a very occassional backfire through the carb but only when it is cold. Wires are relatively new and I have checked for cross fire.
