Pontiac gear change

I am looking to change the rear gears in my 68 Le Mans and This is new territory for me. I am getting enough from under the hood but with a factory 2 spd and gears in the 2.80 range I get nothing to the ground. However, any gear over 3.08 says I need a new carrier. Does this mean I need to change the whole rearend or just parts inside the 10 bolt?

It means that you have to change the part in the rear end that the crown gear bolts to. In certain cases you can put a spacer in there to make up the difference.
