pontiac olds buick diference
I have been wondering if there is a diference between buick olds pontiac v8's in the 60's and 70's. I know that they are the same, but why do you order different parts, and they have different part numbers? 04-16-2004 12:13 PM

I am not an expert on BOP engines of the 60s and 70s but I am pretty sure you are incorrect in your contention that they are 'the same'. GM didn't go to the belly-button corporate engine until the late 70s or early 80s.

Some of the castings were the same but there were alot of differences between them especially in how the were machined and the internal components used.

Oranges and apples.

Those 60's and 70's design you refer too are still used today, or atleast was into the 90's

All three are different motors... The only thing the same, is that they will bolt to the same tranny. You can include Caddilac in that mix.

They are all good solid motors. I think the Olds is the easiest to get parts for........... 04-16-2004 03:40 PM

Like I've seen before in this Forum:" The only thing interchangable is the oil and spark plugs". Tho I believe some shared a common oil filter. GM let each division operate as its own when it came to engines, up till the seventies anyway. Remember the big STINK when people found out they had Chevy sixes in their BOP cars?. Now its just an everyday thing.

My engine is a 74 pontiac 350, and I thought I could use a olds 350 rebuild kit. I am guessing that only the cubic inches are the same?

"You got it, Pontiac".....pun intended...........................

An olds 350 pontiac 350 and buick 350 are as different as night and day. olds 350 rebuild kit would be useless for a pontiac 350 the only pieces you could use out of it would be the frost plugs. This concept alot of people find comfusing made worse buy the fact that in the late 70's gm started sharing the engines between divisions so for example you might buy a 79 pontiac t/a and have a olds 403 engine in it for example. Gm also made it confusing in that they had 4 engines with the 350ci displacement as well as 3 different 455's,400's and 3.8 v-6's.
