popping exhaust all of a sudden

hey, so i'm getting right pissed off, just got a new tranny into my vehicle, ran great all day, then i stopped to get gas, hammered the gas once went through first and second gear, then let up, and it started popping through the passenger side exhaust, does it at idle and accelerating, and this morning when i hammered the gas, it popped through the intake...what the hell would cause this all of a sudden???

I would say your timing is retarded. Sometimes if your distributer holdown isn't tight enough at high rpm the distributer can turn and throw your timing off.

Well you could check your distributor to make sure its tight and throw a light on it to make sure its still where you set it. With that said, popping through the exhaust and popping through the carb are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Popping through the carb suggests to much advance and popping through the exhaust suggest timing is too retarded. For the problem to switch up like that suggests to me an ignition problem. I would check the cap and rotor to see if there in good shape. Look for any cracks in the cap and make sure its properly seated on the distributor. check the rotor for any obvious damage. I'd also suggest checking the plug wires to see if they are cross firing. Check them at night with the engine running and under the hood dark so you can see any spark that might be arcing between them.

sounds like you're over-advanced somehow. Check to see if your weights are sticking, or if a spring has gotten loose/worn.

This on a SBC? Sounds like when you swapped trans, the dist. cap hit he firewall and cracked it or moved it off one of the mounts. pull it off and look for cracks or if it was a little crooked on the distributor.

What he said. You can do the same with some small block Mopars too.
