I think this is interesting. Only thing is concern for hot spots. WOuld the grooves be wide and shallow to prevent this? If they were skinny and deep it'd be a stagnant area in the combustion chamber (a no-no for power and economy). What do you guys think? Have an old engine and some "junk" heads?

I read that article. I even tried modeling his design on the UGS. If he does it right then according to the software, he is right. Let's see how his idea turns out after having it properly tested.

Various race teams and others have experimented with this over the years. Grooving, dimpling, cross-hatching and other modifications have been tried to improve atomization and combustion. Some have been successful, some not. If you look at the CNC-profiled combustion chambers of some heads, you will see a ridged pattern left by the ball cutter. This probably has the same effect (albeit by accident).
