Post port matching heads

I am in the process of swapping the motor out in my 86 2wd suburban. Taking out the 350 and installing a 454. I pulled the 454 down for inspection and am planning on port matching the heads and intake. I have done mopar big blocks and no problems, but I am wondering how much meat I can take out of the head ports without getting too thin? I am using the intake gasket as my template and I will open the ports to match the gasket opening then gradually blend into the stock runner while removing any casting slag as I go. I am using an edelbrock performer intake on this motor. Any other trick mods I can do on my own? any thoughts on my proposed port matching?
thanks,
mark

Sounds like your procedure is sound. If you are just port matching the material should not be a problem. If it looks like you are going to be removing alot of material, I would find a smaller gasket(port size). Keep in mind that you only want to smooth flow. Making it larger will not help anything.
