portawalls

As a father of two and just getting one through college, and the other only a few years away from it, I am trying to keep my restoration expenses at a minimum.
For this reason I am apprehensive about putting out $800 for wide white wall tires for my plymouth business coupe. I have been looking at the portawalls on the web, but many forum threads are very negative about how well they work and hold up. Any input from the folks here would be appreciated.
Thank you.

You did not say if you alredy bought new blackwalls yet. If not, you can get raised white letter tires, and there are people who can grind the sidewall to make real WW.

Maybe do a google search for whitewall tire grinding or different wording.

Had portawalls on a 59 Ford that I ran for years. In the winter plowing through big snow drifts they would get pushed out of shape and you'd think they would never look good again. A couple hundred miles and the centrifugal force would lay them flat against the tire again. I for one loved them and if I was putting biased ply tires on a car/truck again wouldn't hesitate to use them. The thought of grinding/sanding the side rubber off tires send shivers down my spine. But if your using radials your options are limited.

One of my first careers was in a tire shop in 68-69, and all the new whitewall tires were made that way, right from the factory! They put a wide band of white rubber in the sidewall during manufacture and a machine would router/grind a 3/16" deep channel to expose the white.

I have decided to just go with the black walls since I want to put radials on for various reasons. I do appreciate the input from all. Thank you.
