Porting question?

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where I can find some information on porting cylinder heads? I would just send them and have them ported, but $$$$ has its limits, and I don't want to just start hogging out the ports not knowing what I'm doing. Or do you suggest just bolting them on.
The heads are a set of 906 vortec heads with a 3 angle valve job that have been machined to handle .550 lift.

The Spring Issue of Engine masters gives you a fairly good read for beginners. I actually do enjoy porting, but its alabor of love, and it takes a LOT of time to get just right, when in doubt don't use a carbide grinder, too often people make them too large in the wrong areas, and while it may still improve high end HP they don't reap the maximum benifits, and their torque falls dramatically.

Check out www.cfmperformance.com. Mike Stark is one of the best head porters around and has resonable prices and diffeent stages to pick from.

If you've never done it before i wouldnt recommend learning on a new head.... go to a junk yard at pic one up for $20 and practice on that one. theres a lot you can mess up if you let the grinder slip and it hits the wrong part, or if you take too much out of the port and hit a water jacket. I'm not saying you cant do it or anything, but practice makes perfect and i know you'd be pretty mad if you messed up a good head. i know i would be.
