I want to put posi-traction in my 78 el camino but I am not sure at all what gears I should get. It would be mainly for street use, some drag action on weekends. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
I wouldn't go no bigger than 3.73 if you plan on any highway driving.I have 3.42s ith 14" tires and it pulls really nice and is still lovable at highway speeds.
78 Monte..14" tires? Your 78 Monte....does it have dual antennas, crushed velvet door panels, dingle balls and an aztec warrior on the hood?? Just kidding, I agree about the gears...
I agree, I run 3.73 on a street car and the engine is running about 3700 RPM at 70MPH. I am using a TH 350 Trans. Adding the gears really improved acceleration of the 350 Chevy. (IIIIII Like It !!!) Hope this helps
im running 3.91 with a 28" tall tire. it turns 3000 RPM at 60. i love the gears around town. theyre really fun to drive, pull all the hills nicely, and really make the car feel a lot faster than it really is.
but, by the same toke, its crap on the highway. i dont like to turn excessive RPM for extended periods of time, so im slow as hell on the interstates. also, its kinda beastly in the rain and snow.
all in all, it depends on what you can live with. id reccomend something around a 3.55 with taller tires, or a 3.23 with somewhat short tires.

If you want to use your car as a weekend warrior you could put 4.56's and add a saturn overdrive to the back of your trany. Your car would be a monster with decent fuel milage.
