posi rearend swap

A guy at work just told me I could have a 10 bolt posi rearend with 8.5 gears, (didn't know gear ratio) if it will fit in my 72 chevelle, it is in a 78 camaro.

Sorry I have not researched this, but I have to tell him if I want it, so I was hoping some of the hotrod guru's could tell me how hard it would be to put this in my 72 chevellle ?????

Do you have a 12 bolt in there right now? If you do, I wouldn't even think about switching to a smaller rear. If it's a 10, then I would just take the rear and swap the guts. I'm not sure if they fit, and even if it is the right length, the mounts are probably different.

The Camaro would be leaf spring and I think your car is coil. Let the fun begin!!

If your rear end is an 8.5, the guts will swap. If your rear end has a wavy part in the cover, it's not an 8.5. The 8.2 10-bolts and car 12-bolts have a wave in the cover. 8.5's do not.

First thanks for posts that headed me in the right direction.

What I have found out is they both are the same axle except chevelle has coil springs and the camaro has leaf springs.

My chevelle came stock with the 8.5 10 bolt non/posi 2.78 G/R rear axle, chev did put it in a few 72's

So 2 question for the axle swap guru's

I have mig welder, how difficult would it be to grind the spring mount off the axle and weld new coil spring mounts on ???

or how difficult would it be to swap the guts into my rear axle as jimfulco has suggested???

Thanks,
406chevelle

If you are building a street car or even a semi-fast race car, you should ditch that 10 bolt, and upgrade to a 12 bolt or a Ford 9 inch. 10 bolt rearends are notorious for breaking. If you are going to spend money on a rearend, it's better to buy strong now, before you build a weak axle, break it then still have to upgrade later!

How do the Camaro & Chevelle rears compare length-wise (axle flange to axle flange)? Does the Chevelle rear have mounting ears for the upper control arms cast into the center section?
