Perhaps you are talking about a posi traction carrier in the differential?

A '72 Nova should have the 8.5 10 bolt rear end with 28 spline axles. I recommend a new Eaton Posi. In my opinion the Eaton is better than the others and worth the little extra mony that it cost. Installation instructions are here. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showth...ht=change+posi
You will need to know what the gear ratio is before you order anything. If you have a 2.73 to 5.13 gear then the 3 series Eaton Posi wll work fine. If you have a 2.56 or 2.41 then you can not use the Eaton. You will need to find a 2 series Traction lock differential. They can be found in many '70s Trans Ams and at many swap meets. If you go with the new Eaton you will need bearings and shims to install it.

You can take the differential from any 8.5 10 bolt with 28 spline axles and put it in your rear end. There are 2 and 3 series differentials for this rear end. The 2 series is for 2.56 and 2.41 gears and the 3 series is for all others, so be sure to get the right one for the gears that you are using. The 28 spline 8.5 was used in many GM cars from '71 to '89. All of the 8.5 truck rear ends used the Governor Lock differential, which I usually don't recommend for a performance car.
