posi unit for 1971 Camaro

Does it matter what ring and pinion is in the car to add a posi unit? Right now there is a 10 bolt. I am looking at a 8.5 GM 10 bolt posi unit 28 spline 8.5 positraction, that had 3.73 gears on it that are now removed. Will this work or what do I need to know?

You need to find out if it's an 8.2" 10-bolt or an 8.5" 10-bolt. Once you do that, you need to use a carrier that is compatible with the gears you intend to use. Here's a site with some pictures of various GM rear ends:

The 8.5" with 3.73 gears should have a "3-series" carrier, used with 2.73-up (numerically higher) gear ratios. It should have "410408N" cast into it. It will NOT work in an 8.2" rear end. Any 8.5" gears that are less than 2.73 will use a "2-series" carrier, cast 410409N.

Odds are it's an 8.5, my '70 Camaro was an 8.2 and my '71 Z-28 was an 8.5. The axles from an 8.2 of the same length will work in an 8.5 and vice versa but the carriers (as stated above) will not.
