posi unit and axel combo

i was at the junkyard today and i was in search for a posi combo to put in my 68 chevelle malbiu, i was trying to find a 8.5 rear end and a posi unit to fit, i found lots of posi units in trans ams and firebirds but does anyone know if that will fit in a 8.5 axel? i think they are all interchangeble, aslo are they both 28 spline? I think i found a couple of 8.5 with coil overs in some monty carlos and a 77 impala. please if anyone can help that would be very much apreciated.

Q. How can I tell the difference between a GM 8.2 10 bolt, Buick/ Olds/Pontiac 8.2 10 bolt, and a GM 8.5 10 bolt?
A. Each of these has a different spline.
GM 8.2 = 25 spline shaft
Buick/Olds/Pontiac 8.2 = 27 spline shaft
GM 8.5 = 30 spline shaft

I don't think the 8.5 was 30 spline till '88. Before they were 28 spline.

Triaged is correct, 1988 was a rolling model year change for the axle splines from 28 to 30, BOTH can be found in the 1988 8.5 axles but you are more apt to find the 30.

Some of those cars you mentioned can have different axles in them depending upon the year of car you are looking at.

Here is a little helper to identify those different axles.
