good point...thats the same round about diagnosis I was getting to...if motor won't turn over, then disconnect torque converter,if it spins, then the problem is in front of the converter,i.e. the motor....I thought it is just easier to remove 4 converter bolts and double check first before yanking the motor out.

considering that the starter bolts to the transmission on a 727, and that the flywheel is part of the torque converter, could I not unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate and then try to start the engine to see if it spins the torque converter freely absent the connection to the motor? If the torque converter spins withe starter attached to it, wouldn't that eliminate the torque converter/transmission as the source of the problem?

no no no...dont try to start it that way,,,,converter must be bolted to flexplate to avoid damage to flywheel/starter.....wondering...did TCI do the lug mods??....anyways...I would unbolt the converter, stick my fingers in there and turn it,and if it spins,I would next pull the plugs, and manually turn the motor over several rotations.... but you might know right off the bat,if the motor is hard to turn over as you're removing the converter bolts, and the converter ends up spinning freely.

yes. TCI did the lug mods. I sent them the flex plate and they used it to make sure it was right.

I got under the car today and unbolted the torque converter from the flex plate. Once it was unbolted, the torque converter spun freely with one finger turning it. I spun it several times and it never gave any resistance.

ok then....what happens when you now crank it over??....bolt the converter back up first, before you start it.
