I truly believe this is one of the greatest songs of all time. I don't mean country songs, I mean all songs, one of the greatest of all time. And what a delivery. I hear the judges on American Idol telling the contestants to "believe" the song and feel it, look close at George's delivery of the spoken part, THAT is how you do it youngsters, that is how you do it. RIP Mr. Jones, RIP.

Brian

Dang, George Jones is gone

Sorry to see his passing. There was a time in the mid 70's, to early 80's when all there was on rock radio was disco. I started listening to country and outlaw country and really liked George. He sang it like it was and then lived it...or vise versa...

He has finally found the peace that so eluded him most of his life.....RIP George...

Here's a little short story on the lighter side of the legend.

Back in the 60's George toured and played a lot around the Beaumont, Orange and South Louisiana areas and during that time, due to substances beyond his control, he became known and "No Show Jones". This was because he would book a large club, venue, well they were really just big beer joints with huge dance floors and parking lots. True to his nickname sometimes he would cancel at the last minute and also sometimes the Club Owners would call us to see if we could make it over and play the gig.

At that time we were a weekend band that tried to stay booked as much as possible but occasionally would have a free weekend and most of the places weren't over an hour or so drive. Therefore, if the others were willing we would grab things up, hook onto the trailer and head to the gig. I never had the chance to meet and ?thank? Possum for all those gigs he provided for us but I did talk to his bass player once and told him to be sure and thank him for us. He laughed very hard and said, 'Young man you ain't the only one that has sent to thanks to The Possum"

George was a great entertainer. Lots of good music there.
We all have to go sometime , but he left us with some pretty good music. Thank you George and God Bless.

Most of the 'so called country' DJ s are saying ''George who?''
I don't listen to modern country. Can't stand it.
All the greats are going, and there is no one to fill their shoes.
Saw him twice. Last time was with Conway and Loretta.

those kind of D.J.s aren't D.J.s at all, they are just button pushers and don't have any clue (nor do they care) how the ?stuff? they are playing even got there. Lots of folks drove lots of highway miles and ate bologna sammiches so that people today could listen to this music "IF THEY WANTED TO".

When it came to my woman left me, my dog died and I'm crying in my beer music - - - there was NONE better before or after.

Read this last night. A real loss to country music. I heard David Allen Coe had a nasty collision a month or so back and almost beat George to the big place in the sky. AFA as new DJs, this glorified pop music with slide guitars and fiddles they call "country" today doesn't compare to the real stuff. I've always loved 60's and 70's stuff, especially all the outlaw.

Randy Travis and Alan Jackson are about the newest ones that are any good.

There's a few more that have the pure Country roots but as the lyrics go in that old Johnny Lee song, Cherokee Fiddle, "the music is sold by lawyers" and $$$$ is the bottom line no matter what it sounds like. Scotty, Josh, Miranda, Vince and a few others still hang on to the Opry sound but ratings, concerts and sales still RULE. Both of my sons and one grandson still like and play the traditional Country Music (along with the modern) but I'm afraid that after they are gone, the influence that my Dad made on me and I made on them will be gone.
