Powdercoat or paint?
 

Hi All,

I'm going to renew my '87 Corvette calipers and was wondering which finish to use? I'd like to do them in red, then sand the fin "tops" back to natural (aluminum), then clearcoat over that. Also will need to do all the remaining aluminum pieces: CA's, cross shafts, spindles, etc. in clear after glassbeading them.

By all means, if you have a good shop in town, powder coat. They can do any color you want including candys and no paint in the world will hold up as well. Plus, they will do the blasting for you before coating saving you that step and $$.

There's a good shop nearby. I'm just wondering how they do multiple colors/coats? I understand the initial color is applied after blasting to a uniform finish, but what's done after the initial coat and before a clearcoat? Or is this not possible?

They can only do one color - two toning causes mixing of the colors. As I understnad it, most powders yield a semi-gloss finish. For single colors, they coat and bake the color then for max gloss they coat and bake a gloss clear right over the color coat. 2 steps.

We can do 2 colors so it can be done ..

I guess my coaters just don't want to bother with it!

some don't mess with it but customers pay the bill so they get what they want,,,

you can do multiple colors of powder coat, but you have to do 1 color at a time and use glass tape to mask off coated areas since it has to go through the oven at 400 for 10 min. we don't do it for customers where I work because of the time involved. but I get to do all my rod parts for free. you can do small parts in an oven in your garage, sears sells a system for 160 bucks an powder is 2.00 a pound, 1 pound covers 30 sq.ft.
