Post power brakes that feel like manual

hi, i have a 48 ford coupe with a stock 350 chevy engine and tranny. it has a mid 80's power brake set-up with mustang II steering and disc in front.we have tried and checked everything and it still feels like manual brakes. the booster is holding air pressure, and all brakes are new. any ideas? thanks! mike

The vacuum canister provides assistance when your pedal pressure opens a valve and allows atmospheric pressure to push the canister plenum against the master cylinder actuation rod. So even if you have vacuum in the canister, if you aren't opening the valve, you get no assist. I would check the valve to be sure it actually allows atmospheric pressure to enter. It is also possible that it is massively out of adjustment. It sounds like a defective valve to me. Get a replacement from a junk yard and see if this correct the problem. If it does, take it back and buy a new one which you know to be reliable.
