power loss

250 in-line 6 cyl. chevy. I have rebuilt the engine, set the valves, etc. Truck will start and idle smooth, seems to be ok in first gear, however when you shift to second it seems to loose all power. Also I put a new exhaust system on it and after I put the new muffler on the exhaust pipe at the manifold is red hot and glowing after a short drive.

Sounds like the timing is retarded. What's the total timing?
