Post Power steering problem

Installed 76 mustang 2 rack ( removable pinion houseing, I believe this is the Ford model)The pump is a GM I reduce valve pressure using 4 shims. Started engine and turn steering wheel, dam near took my hand off, Steering wheel whiped back and forth. If there is to be a check valve in line where does it go? The pressure line is a inverted flare fitting at rack( they both are ).Thanks for any info.

Question

Are you sure you have pressure and return at the spool valve installed correctly (backwards) and as for the shimming, do you have the required pressure specs and check the final pressure with a quality gauge?

Is this a fresh rack or take-out?

Lines are not backwards, large hole to pressure, small to return, The rack is a new rebuildt. The shiming is a kit I bought with approx. pressures tested at there shop.

I think that the large hole/ line is the return and the small hole the supply. that is how I hooked mine up and it works fine....Glennk

I purchased the hose kit from Gotta Show hose company. There was no directions on which hole to put lines in. I guess I just asumed with the way the hoses came that the big end was pressure line.
