Powerglide Band Adjustment

Hi
I'm getting different answers when I do a search on the procedure for low band adjustment on aluminium PG
some say in to 72"lbs then 3 3/4 out
Some say in to 40"lbs then 4 out
Some even say that the loosening of the 9/16" locknut is critical @ :quote: " loosen by 1/4 turn EXACTLY (this is not an estimate)" .....WTF it's a lock nut!!

Are there different alloy glides? Or does the 40 inch pound tightening setting refer just to the cast iron PG's

What confuses me all the more, is that in Australia here, we only used the PG from 1968 to 1971
In '68 they went behind sbc's - 307 and 327's (my case) and '69-'71 behind 'some' holden six cylinders and some v8's, fairly rare, most were trimatics or four speeds. My manual says 40" lbs then 4 turns out, but the glide that I got, I'm not is not standard to my vehicle. It could ave come out of anything as fat as I know, a chevelle , nova, impala , camaro, vette,

Is there any way to check?

Mine has no modulator valve and a manual valve body and works fine except for a bit of a soft change from first to top when I rug it and up shift
The band adjustment hasn't been checked for some time and I simply want to be sure that its where it should be..

Powerglide band is always tightened via inch pounds measurement.

I've done this for years on stock or racing transmissions: using 75 inch pounds with a proper torque wrench, then back out the adjuster 3.5 turns on an OEM used band. We are talking inch pounds , so if you use 72 inch pounds or a 80 inch pound figure, there is very little difference.

Even if you back out 4 turns on the adjuster, you will be OK... the adjuster is a fine thread, not much difference in 1/2 turn.

If you have a new band , recheck the adjustment after a few hundred miles

I'll run with that. I did use a high quality inch pound wrench.

My access was tight around the exhaust pipes and difficult to hold the locknut still from turning while I wound the adjuster in, so I spun it right the way off then put it back on and locked it after the adjustment was complete. I couldn't see how this would affect the setting. Of course I held the adjuster firm whilst locking the nut, am I OK with that?
