Powerglide question
 
Last week I bought a 59 bel air with 2 speed powerglide. Most the time while shifting from R to P it grinds in slightly. My question is, I'm wanting to drop the trans pan and service it but cant find info on what filter it uses. Most listings I see show a filter for 1962 and later. Does anyone have a link or a part number for the filter I need? Thanks

While under the car just now I noticed this open hole in the bottom of the trans. (Pic below) This is not the drain plug hole is it? On the dipstick the fluid level reads normal but I found this open hole kind of shocking..,

are you using a floor shifter? The old cast iron PG had reverse under low
shifter reads P N D L R

mistake: I think the shift pattern was changed by then,sorry.
I have 2 power glide kits somewhere.If I can find them,I will mail it to you

That would be great!

Anyone else have any insight on the threaded hole in my trans in the picture above? I think I read somewhere that some powerglides did not actually have a drain plug? How is that?

That hole is just open to the tourque converter if and oil comes out its from the front seal or converter o-ring.
The drain plug was on the back side of the casting and there was a just a screen filter behind the right side plate.
Dont understand the noise. Try it in neutral and see if it creeps or stays still.

I'll try that. So it appears the cast iron powerglides dont even have removable oil pans, so the most service I can give it really while keeping it in the car would be to drain the fluid, remove side plate and clean screen and replace seal and fill it with fresh fluid. Anything else? Will it matter if I put a shallow bolt in the hole for the torque converter to seal it off?

Its just a pipe plug.
Drain what oil you can. I would only check the screen if you think it is scummy of sat for a long time.
You can do pressure checks and adjust the low and reverse bands in the car.
Maybe someone else will understand the noise. Nice looking 59.

Thanks, yeah the car did sit for a couple years before I bought it. It starts right up and runs smooth though short of the R-P grinding noise. Just trying to learn as much as I can and get to know the car a little better.

you can also unhook a cooler line at the radiator and start the engine and the trans will drain itself (not fully) .do that a few times ...refilling between each. Voila ...fluid change.:D
