PPG Concept single stage with a color sand, how many coats to shoot?
So we're about to shoot my 1966 VW bus with PPG Concept this weekend! Im using original colors, Sea Blue and Cloud White, single stage with a color sand to finish it off. Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation on number of coats to shoot. The spec sheet says two but thats for base/clear im guessing, we're debating between 4 and 5.
I bought a Devilbiss Tekna with a 1.2 for the job. Very excited, after years of cutting, welding, fillering, sanding and finally sealed with K38 and wet sanded with 600 its finally ready to paint!! here are some pics, http://66split.com How many coats? |

i use concept for color. i will usually shoot 3-4 coats then block and do 2 nice coats. cuts down on the thanewave and such. depending on color i sometimes clear it.

I have found that the PPG Concept whites dry very hard. Sanding the fine scratches out took forever. The last car I painted with white, I cleared it. It was a much easier job to buff out. I didn't have any problem with red or blue. I hope this helps.

I think I waited about a week. Yes, it is interesting that colors sand different than white. After finding this out, I also heard it from another person who painted white. If you can spray it with the least amount of orange peel, it would probably look the way it was painted back then. Concept does lay down nice.

if your going to buff concept you best get on it within 48 hours.
i block after overnight dry then recoat. give it 24-48 hours and get it buffed. |

What is your reason for double painting.............curious? Seems like extra work. |

Wow, very glad I asked! I was planning a few weeks! Im thinking maybe only block the blue on the bottom half of the bus and leaving the white untouched. I'll make the call when how smooth it lays down. Curious on why two as well.

each coat you apply will add trash and peel. once covered it is blocked smooth then recoated. only 2 coat of trash or peel to seal with.

I've never heard of such a thing. What kind of trash are you picking up??...............and peel? |

in a 100k dollar down draft none but someone painting in a garage will get air borne trash in it. peel depends on your gun control .

home painting by hand
This may seem a crude thing to discuss with experienced painters, but recently I saw an article by a fellow that painted an older model Ford Ranger by hand. He mostly used a roller and he primed and painted with Rustoleum paint right off the shelf. He did do a lot of blocking and buffing, but the result he got was very good. Just curious if anyone else had heard of doing it this way. Skyraker

it's called "tipping " . painting by brush. but i would never use rustoleum when there are quality urethane's to brush on. most marine paints are well suited for it.
