preparing for adhesive

I have only used adhesive on a couple of small panels on the INSIDE of fenders (to provide backing when filling small rust holes). Now I need to repair a large rusted area, about 4 inches by 2 feet. all across the bottom of a 48 ford truck rear fender. I have made the repair panel but have not cut anything on the original fender. The directions with the adhesive DURAMIX FROM 3M say "do not use a butt joint". Question: What kind of joint should I use? 3m does not provide any diagrams or very clear instructions.
I have used but joints with welded repair panels but I am not sure how to proceed now.

You would most likely have to use a lap joint. Just curious,,,how come you aren't just welding it in?

Most adhesives call for a 3/4" or 1" lap joint, make sure you have the metal surface ground clean and also make sure the piece fits well before bonding it on. The Fusor website has some good instructions for reference.
