prepping my car now for paint. questions on how far to sand existing paint
i need to know how far to sand down the existing paint. some have said scuff the clear good and block the car to make it all even. others have said that i need to sand to the base. On the first car i prepped the base was sooo thin that the sander burnt right through it.
here is a pic of a fender i did.. is this scuffed enough? i know its going to kinda hard to tell..
2nd pic is after i washed the fender.
i didnt sand much of the fender under the molding.
All that's really needed on the original paint is for it to be sanded
till all the peel and shine is gone.
you can get enough adhesion by just scuffing it but sanding will
give a flatter base to paint over. 400 to 600 works pretty good.
Air sanders work pretty good but it's to easy to break through.
They're to agressive, you have to be careful.
I believe hand sanding always does better. :pimp:
I second that, also an air sander will leave half moon digs in the paint when used by an inexperanced person, wetsand with a soft block ,never just your hands and fingers and tape off ajacent panels so you dont put digs in the door when sanding the fender
thanks guys!.. im glad i got that cleared up..
i will block the rest of the car with 400, then 600 wetsand
