pressure at the gun inlet?

I bought myself a Father's day present, an IWATA LS400 W/1.3 tip and I'm still getting use to it. The manual recommends 20psi max pressure at the gun inlet but I'm use to using 35-45psi with my other guns. I shot a fender last week with the new gun and cc and it came out sh***y. There were dry spots and orange peel everywhere and it didn't seem like the paint was well atomized. I set the gun up by using the masking paper on the wall and the 1-second trigger squeeze, I had a good fan, good coverage and no runs. I had a regulator on the gun and kept the pressure at 20psi. What psi do you forum members with the LS400 use at the gun? Any other suggestions?

regards

Ron

It should be 20 psi at the tip. With clears you don't worry about what the book says. You set your gun to spray the way you want it to spray. Spray a piece of paper on the wall and hold the trigger for one full second. Open the fan to 8 inches, if it runs, reduce your fluid control, if it's splotchy, increase pressure.

Set the pressure at whatever setting gives you acceptable results.

thanks, you all were right.

I bumped the pressure at the gun up to 30 psi and re-tuned the settings with the masking paper on the wall method. I sanded off most of the previous cc. This time the IWATA layed the cc on as smooth as glass. I'm not sure why the manufacturer's recommended psi at the gun(19psi) didn't work as well as the higher pressure I ended up using. There definitely was a lot more overspray at the higher pressure.

Ron
