Alright I've got a little 94 dodge shadow w/ the 2.2L w/ aluminium head.It has 87,000 on it and runs great.I've been told they are known for blowing head gaskets at or above 50,000.I've seen several 2.2s bellowing anti-freeze out the tailpipe so I figure its true.Is there any preventative maintanence for this????Its a good car,but it ain't a hotrod and I don't wanna have to fix it later.

The only "preventative" maintenance for the 2.2 is......Cross your fingers and pray..........ALOT. ;) ;)

Make sure the cooling system is in good repair, a retorque of the head gasket wouldn't hurt either. I believe the problem is not only a 2.2 Litre problem as I have had many people with newer Stratus's with the 2.4 having the same problem, funny the factory says the same thing over and over "this is not a recallable problem" :rolleyes: . You have to wonder how many Chryco owners will ever buy another one with the poor customer service they have been dishing out.
You know every one I have seen just needed a little TLC during the installation phase and some sealer where the cam chain runs through, I think this is one of those "engineering decisions" where they saved 10 cents. I've said it once and I'll say it again..."nonretorquing head gaskets my butt!"

Yea maybe I'll get out the torque wrench to be safe.Changing heads on the Monte usualy means buddies and beer and a good time.Changing heads on the Daily Driver usualy means throwing tools swearing and making the neighbors think I'm a nut. <img src="graemlins/evil.gif" border="0" alt="[evil]" /> :eek:

changing a head gasket on a 2.2L is a pretty easy and straight forward job, especially the non-turbo models. I've changed many of 2.2L head gaskets, due to overboost of the turbo. If you do have to change the head gasket be sure to compare the old gasket with the new one. Around 88 or 89, I believe, all 2.2s and 2.5s had cross drilled heads and the head gasket would need a couple of extra water holes in the gasket to ensure proper cooling of the head. From what I remember, cross drilled heads had a "x" stamped on the passenger side near the timing belt pulley. Head gaskets can be changed on the 2.2 without completely removing the head from the car and won't take up your whole day either.
