Preventing bare metal during construction.

I am building a space frame chassis which is at the tack welded stage. The tubes are beginning to show surface rust. I was thinking of spraying WD40 on them but was wondering if this would interfere with painting or welding later. Is there something else that I can use to prevent rusting? Itís too early in the build for epoxy primer or POR-15.

I would not spray down the chassis with WD40 or any other kind of oil, it will just cause you problems down the road. You will probably get people recommending Ospho and POR15 and epoxy and other various products.
If it were mine, I wouldn't worry about it. A little surface rust is not a big deal. When it comes time to paint the chassis you will be sanding it with 80# to prep it for epoxy and that will remove the surface rust.
We get a little paranoid about rust, the truth is all steel has some level of surface rust (oxidation) whether you can see it or not. That's why we paint steel, to seal the surface and stop the oxidation so it can't continue to spread.

In think u could use metal prep wash on it and slow down the surface rust.

I have built a couple tube chassis and we just leave them raw tubing(they were 4130 chromo... I think they have a coating on them from production for shipping reasons). Prep your weld areas nicely and after it is fully welded get it media blasted or tubing lends itself nicely to wrapping sandpaper around it. I wire wheel all the welds withe a 4 1/2" angle grinder. Cleans the tubes with your prep solvent of choice and seal it in epoxy. Don't worry about surface/flash rust unless you plan on having it sit for years. If you are very concerned or if it is in a moist environment you can get some rattle can rust converter and hit the main tubes(not the weld areas) and just sand it off when your ready to prime.
