Primer/sealer question

Hi all,
I am using ppg NCP280 primer on my project. If I apply the primer but wait a week or two to sand it, and perhaps another couple weeks before adding a color top coat. Do I
need to add a sealer on top of the primer before my color coat?

Sealers still confuse me as whether or when they are necessary. Are they just a very reduced primer? Do they go on really thin and leave a nice smooth surface finish before color top coat? Since color is applied right after a sealer I would imagine that it must go down smooth to not require any sanding before the color. Is this correct how they work.

Is the PPG primer your using a 2 part (or 2k) primer? If it is you will be fine with not sanding or top coating for a while. A seal is just what the name implies. It seals off the finish that you are going over the top of. You will probably get some different answers from different folks on this, but it has been my experience if you are using a 2k primer you really don't need a sealer. What happen when you apply paint over an unknown finish or a cheap primer is the color actually sinks in. If you have heard the term gloss or color hold out that it what sealer or 2k primer gives you. The new paint without a sealer or 2k primer may be smooth and slick and actually look pretty good in some cases, but it ain't gonna' cut it if you want nice stuff. In the worst examples the color coat will actually lift cheap primer or what ever is under it. I say this a lot but it is true in EVERY case. "Unless you have years and years of experience do exactly what the paint mfg. recomends." Their tech folks are great and they want your paint to come out right. If you do listen to anyone else on any forum remember this. They don't have to come help you when their suggestion fails. Happy painting.

Forgot to say if you have any other questions I'd be glad to try and answer them. If I don't know I usually don't answer a post. I do not know it all. I do a little custom bike work and I learn stuff with every new job. Good to see guys tryin' to do their own work. Good luck with this deal.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the PPG primer I am using is a two part primer. It is pretty good stuff I am told. I have read that if you leave a part in primer for a long time before painting, it is best to use a sealer. Not sure if that what I should do since I cannot paint very soon after applying primer.

The longer a 2k primers sets up the harder it gets and it should be fine, but sealing will never hurt you.
