Priming my 388ci SBC
Hey all, the time has come and ive begun to prime my engine.
I filled the oil filter up, rented the priming tool and started the process spinning the tool clockwise.
More quickly than I expected oil started to ooze from the pushrods except from two valves on the passenger side cylinder.
Do I have to turn the crank 1/4 revolutions and continue priming to get these last to lifters pumped up?
Should I be worried or is this rather typical?

That happened to me on my last 2 engines. As you found out, if all is well, it only takes maybe 30 seconds or so to get a good prime.
I primed a few minutes, turned the engine some, primed some more.
A word of caution. If you coated the cam real good with the cam paste, don't over prime the engine, you could rinse off all the paste.
Just make sure it fires quickly and runs for the 30 minutes at fast idle, around 1,600 to 2,000 rpm. Might be good to fire it outside incase you need to cool the radiator with the hose or something. Also, have a timing light hooked up and ready too so you don't have to shut it down for adjustments.
The lower part of the oil pump priming tool fits into an oil galley that feeds the passenger side lifters. If you have a tool that doesn't have this lower half, you won't get oil up to the rocker arms, because a big chunk of the galley is missing.
That seems to be the exact tool I used.
I primed the system thoroughly with the tool. In fact the smaller diamater part of it at the top ended up breaking off near the end (woops! sorry autozone :confused: )
The valves on the two lifters that did not pump up very much were compressed not sure if this would have any affect?
Should I make turning the crank 1/4 revolutions with additional priming my next step?
I don't know that it will make any difference, you know the motor is getting oil. But if it makes you feel better, yeah, go ahead.
