Trailer queens aside, when it comes to the real Pro Street cars and the real Gassers are they similar?

In my opinion, Pro Street defines a car that is a compromise between a hot rod and a race car. As with all compromises, these cars tend to serve neither function very well.

A Gasser is purely a race car. That's all they are meant to do, and they do it well. They look the way they do not to be outrageous or extreme, but to be as competitive as possible while still complying with the rules and regulations of the NHRA at the time.

Furthermore, I don't believe that Pro Street is a modern anything....It's a fad that peaked 20 years ago. Pro Street is as passť as 15" billet wheels, neon, and (soon to be) air ride, and shaved door handles (again, in MY opinion).

Well Im not an expert on Pro Street but I never see one with Air Ride before, most I see have straight axle drag racing suspension, then again Im not an expert.
I meant pro street more as in the Fastest Street Car, and NMCA Style Pro Street not the Trailer Queens.

I had about five pro street cars,, And I drove them...Just because it's a pro street car doesn't mean they have to ride on a trailer..

A pro street car sit's low on the ground...
A gasser sit's two feet off the ground...

I like to keep all that weight close to the ground..

To me there is a big difference...
Give me a pro street car any day over a gassers..
They look like 4 wheel drive's to me..

Compare the Gassers and the NMCA/ Hot Rod Fastest Street Car Pro Street/
The Gassers were street legal Pump Gas Drag Cars as are the NMCA Pro Street Cars. Just now Tubbed Frames exist, and newer parts that NMCA Pro Street are street legal Drag Cars. They are similar to a more modern Gasser.
Like this kind of Pro Street:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH-y2mxYS6c
or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TRr51x9Lxs
or back to the 90s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NjGhMEZD7c

I know a Pro Street car isn't a Gasser but aren't they a similar concept?

Guess I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about the Pro Street hot rod fad of the 80's and early 90's. You are apparently talking about a specific drag racing class. Please excuse my ignorance, I'm from a (commie/nanny) state that has only two dragstrips, so I'm not as well versed on the subject of drag racing as those of you lucky enough not to live in Minnesota.

Interesting topic....carry on.

I always forget about the original Pro Street Cars, since I live close to Brandenton Dragstrip runs a huge NMCA Pro Street event every year so I always think of those cars. You should come to Florida, Hot Rods, Drag Racing and classic cars every where (and sadly mustangs).

It seems to me, my perspective formed by a stack of late 80s-early 90s Super Chevy magazines my uncle gave me- Pro Street is where you cut up a car to fit big-n-littles, chrome/billet everything else, apply some wild paint job, smooth the firewall and inner fenders (continuing crazy 80s-90s paint underhood, be it a grid pattern, puzzles, or hot pink with a zig-zag of yellow and teal). All of this powered by the brute force put out by a 350sbc with a TH-350 transmission. Sometimes with a high-rise intake, or too-big cam.

Sounds semi-ricer to me, trying to embody the race car look and coming less than halfway in performance.
