Problem with clear coat...??

I had made a thread a couple of weeks back about excessive orange peel in my clear coat. The orange peel was so excessive that it was taking forever to sand smooth w/1000 and then just about when I'd think I was almost there I'd break through on every panel. Sooooo, I threw in the towel & sanded out the entire car w/400, taped her all up again and re-shot the base which came out beautiful. However, the clear coat again gave me problems.

I shot two test panels before shooting the entire car, both my headlight covers (which were off the car) one with a dusty coat and one with a wet coat to experiment. The wet coat came out beautiful & the light dusty coat came out real bad as if there were small grains of sand under the clear. So I went with applying the wet coat route on the entire car.

I only got around to putting one wet coat of clear on before noticing that I was dripping pretty bad on every vertical panel. I didn't think it would of been wise to apply second and third coats over drips so I stopped. I picked up a nib from the body supply shop and a few hours later the drips filed out easily. Being I sprayed the one coat on really wet, I gave sanding it out a try. The orange peel this time is very minimal and I can get a full panel such as a door smooth w/1000 in about 1/2 an hour w/out breaking though, what a relief.

The new problem I'm having is small pinholes... not everywhere but in congolmorates randomly scattered here and there....???

How long do I have to re-coat the clear..?? It's already been 3 days. I don't want to sand the pinholes smooth out of fear of breaking through to base..?? Can I just 2nd and 3rd coat clear over them with the majority of the 1st coat (99% w/the pinholes being the exception) smoothed out...???

Sorry for the long winded opening but I figured the more info the better help I can get.

the small pinholes are solvent pop from to much clear to heavy of coats what clear are you using and what temp of reducer are you using your orange peel could be from low air pressure under reduced clear or even the gun can cause this problem

The clear is Shopline brand JC620 Acrylic Urethane Clearcoat w/shopline slow urethane hardner JH6285. The spec sheet does not say to use a reducer...?? Just 4:1 clearcoat / hardner. My gun is regulated to 50 psi, sheet calls for 50-60.

You went from really dry to really wet by changing your technique, now try inbetween

If I am not mistaken on the p sheet it says you can reduce with jr506-507 and there is a fast reducer also I use the same stuff and mix 4:1:1 with the 507 because sometimes I spray in a open shop around 80 degrees and I spray it on like I want it to look I also follow the flash time next coat window and it lays flat if you have alittle texture wait a little while and let the reducer/slow work you can almost watch it flatten out hope this helps

Thanks for the help guys...!! I feel soooo much more at ease having some type of direction to follow vs my own in-experienced guesses. BBC... that makes total sense b/c the base (which uses reducer) layed out with some texture and in a minute or two it self leveled itself and looked beautiful. Chevymon, I will definatly try my best. My father also swung by to see if he could offer any advice... I have an air water seperator before 50 ft of hose that I'm using. I was regulating the air before the seperator and when I pull the trigger it would drop below 40 psi. My father said I should try to up the pressure @ the seperator / before the hose to maybe 100 and regulate it at the gun instead. Should I be regulating the air when the trigger is being pulled..??

It's not a Old school American Hot Rodder I'm working on but here's a pic anyways of where I'm at w/the car. It's a 1985 Mazda RX-7.

Are those Christmas lights up in the booth?

MartinSr... that's a makeshift paint area. It's actually the awning off the back of my house. The tarps & 1/2" EMT can come down and go back up in prob 1/2 an hr. Thank you for the readings.

I always adjust my air pressure at the gun with the trigger pulled all the way back. It helps to do this with no product. In the gun sometimes I put a little bit of laquer thinner in the gun to clean and check the fan. But I always spray a test pattern. With product before I spray the car

One of best advices. Always have a test panel to test your gun BEFORE shooting the car.

I think your father has the right idea. Turn the pressure up to 120 psi at the wall and set the gun regulator where you want it. You also may need some high flow fittings and you should be using 3/8 inch hose.

Well tonite after work, I prep'ed and taped up just a fender instead of the whole car. The only adjustments I made from the last time I shot were adjusting the pressure before the hose high and then at the gun to 65 which dropped it right into the recommended pressure range that the spec sheet calls for. (I think 50ish) I also added the reducer at 4:1:1 (clear /hardener/reducer) and gave it a shot. I must say she came out BEAUTIFUL...!! No peel... No solvent pop... No drips... I can see my reflection...!! It took me all summer and if I can get the rest of the car to come out like this it was all worth it. Thanks again for all the help guys..!! I'll snap some pictures when she's done.
