Red face Problems with rods on chev. small block

I have had a 305 chevy v8 bored .o3o over, the pistons were swaped on the origional rods, and now they don't line up square with the crank shaft. There is no twist, but the rods have probably been turned around on the pistons, or several were bent before the overhaul and the bearings or sides of the rods showed no signs of wear. What has happened and can I turn the notch of the piston towards the back of the engine and get dependable service from the backwards piston?

You can do it but thrust loads on the piston become unbalanced and may cause scuffing of the skirt after high mileage, mechanically the balance is affected slightly. There is virtually no chance of catastrophic failure due to this mod, at one time turning pistons around was a rodding trick used by many racers because it changes piston dwell before and after TDC. It has very little effect though and fell out of favor because of this.
