Hi guys. Some of you will remember that I have been posting threads on various subjects since last fall about upgrading the engine in my (avatar) hot rod. You guys have been a great help, and I have learned a lot over the winter and spring. For that, I thank you sincerely. I now have a very strong running 383 that I am very happy with and proud of. I wouldn't have gotten here without your help.
The engine is now all together, and I am in the final stages of tuning the new QFT SS-850 DP. I am slow at carb tuning but I'll get it. It's close.
Any way, the point of all this is that I like to go a little faster each year at the annual club nostalgia drags. This year they are July 25. 2 weeks away.
The engine, TH350 trans and 3500 rpm torque converter have all been gone through. The car is ready, other than rear gears. It is a Quickchange. I'm trying to figure out how to calculate the gear that will use the whole motor at the 1/8 mile lights. Peak power should be right about 6200. So, shift it at 6700? The rear tire is 10" pie crust cheater slick. These are way softer than last year's BFG T/A's. (educated thumb nail durometer). They are 28.5" tall. 3" taller than last year. They have a decently soft sidewall also. Should hook a lot better than last year.
Car weighs 2280 w/driver. Estimated 525HP @6200.
Changes from last year: engine upgrade, 75 or so hp, better heads, better cam, bigger carb, better headers. Rear tire change. 3.55:1 gears last year.
Last years best pass: 2.04sec @60ft, 5.29 sec@330ft, 7.95 sec @1/8 mile @92.38 mph.
Wallace calculators say this 60 foot time is typical of a 74 mph run. So obviously I am losing all my time at the starting line. Reaction times are inconsistent because of no practice, but not bad for a 65 year old geezer either.
I know a lot of you guys are drag racers. What gears would you recommend? I'm thinking in the 5.50:1 range?
Also, what kind of launch sequence would you recommend?
Sorry this got so long. Sitting here, bored, recovering from the flu. Don't feel like going out in the shop yet.
