Proper way to install a windshieldand back glass?

I have a 68 Camaro that is about to be painted,I removed the back glass and there is some minor rust around the channel I want to stop it before the new glass is installed. If i use POR 15 on it will the brush on urethane primer that the installer uses make the urethane bond to it?Another question, would you use urethane from a caulking tube or rope seal ?

I would get the rust out of there completely before you paint. If you are going to all the trouble to paint the car, there is little point skimping on preparation only to have the rust get worse under your new paint.

You can use a wire brush wheel on a reversible drill with some naval jelly or other phosphoric acid based rust dissolver until all the rust is gone and the metal is shiny and clean, then use your brush on primer. I am assuming you are respraying over existing paint?

I'm not sure of the answers to your other questions though, but I have no doubt someone else will give you the info you are looking for.

I agree with Rich, get all that rust removed. Be patient, it will take many iterations of applying the rust remover and wire brushing. And, yes get a reversible drill and reverse it when the wire brush bristles start to lean.

However, I would recommend using a 2 part epoxy primer. It is superior to any other primers for adhesion to bare metal.
If you look on the instructions for the 3M urethane sealer, it will say this also.

I just went through this process for the windshield channel on my 69 Vette.
I used epoxy primer from SPI and brushed it on.

I would use the butyl tape (rope) for this. There is a "Sticky" thread on how to install a windshield with a great info post by MARTINSR. Be sure to read that.
