Let me digress from the high price of gasoline for a post.
If you are a smoker (and I'm not nor have ever been, except for 2nd hand stuff, thankfully), don't bother coming to New York State. Effective today, the price for a pack of smokes just increased by $1.25 a pack. That means the guy who checked out in front of me yesterday, paying $11 for two packs of Marlboro's would now be expected to pay $13.50 plus another $.18 in sales tax or $13.68. I recall when they were $2.00 a carton or $.25 a pack out of a machine (my parents both smoked and both died from the effects of emphysema). Add that to the high price of gas plus the grocery store prices, home heating oil that's almost $5/gallon, the 'Joe Average' folks of the world don't have a chance to ever get the little paid off house, two cars, a nice retirement fund, reasonable health insurance and a nice yearly vacation Taxes - plus one other major negative to life, are inevitable .Dave W |

I didn't get rid of the V8 vehicle , I just don't use it as a DD anymore. I was thinking today of all the people who bought into the huge SUV craze ( stupid ugly vehicle ). I wonder if they still love em after a fill up ? I put 30 dollars in the Honda today. E to F with a quickness. Gotta love it. |

I read today that GM is planning on slashing SUV and light truck production by 35%, roughly 700,000 vehicles, over the next couple years. They are contemplating dumping the Hummer brand altogether. That brand has to be the ultimate Stupid Ugly Vehicle to date.
I wonder if the $50,000+ Tahoe Hybrid will be among the cuts? |

My daily driver is a hyundia elantra and I avg 35 mpg all day long w/ ac. I laugh my butt off every time a SUV passes me and honks for driving the speed limit
Tell me this is it weird that I get better gas milage at 55mph and 2100 rps than I do at 45 and around 1800? its in the same speed on the tranny to? oh well. I'm trying hard to max my MPG. I'm sure with a few more mods I can push 40 MPG easy.

One interesting thing I noticed yesterday as I took a trip into our "fair" Capital city of Albany during rush hour. It's about 20 miles, the speed limit is posted at 65 - and before $4 gal gas if you were running that speed, at a minimum, you would get a 'flip-off' and on up from there with the staties still out for coffee. Yesterday, it was very close to the speed limit with a few even below. The only one significantly above, with, of course his hat brim shading his neck, was driving a ricer complete with 747 stabilizer and low profile tires, cutting back and forth across lanes.
And again, my DD is a V10 guzzler

a cars gas mileage is only as good as the price at the pump. a car that gets 35 mpg is about like one that gets 22 mpg 4 or 5 years ago. when they begin to make all cars have 65 to 70 mpg the oil companies will make up there loss. just like if everyone lowered there consumption like they have, the oil companies will and are making up their loss.

Hey Bill - there's a gas war goin' on out your way!
Just for reference, the above thread is about 2 years old. Gas prices have almost doubled in that time. I seem to remember in the summer of '05 they were still in the $1.5x range. So in 3 years it has more than doubled! Just got back from Spain last week, gas there was about 1.30 Euros per liter. With the current exchange rate, that's about 8 bucks a gallon. I think the scary part is how fast it has gone up, though. Five years ago when I was in Germany it was 1.15 a Euro or so, so European gas prices are at least relatively steady, from my experience. Wonder where we'll be in another 2 years? Will I drive my hotrod at 100 bucks a tank? Probably. 200 or 250? Maybe not... K |
