Ok guys, this is my first build, or the first non-stock rebuild...
I have a blown 3.8 Ford V6 that I have gone all out on.
It has some headwork with bigger valves, springs, and of course a bigger cam.
It has stock hydraulic roller lifters, and for now, non-adjustable stock rockers.
I used some 20-50 oil I had aound the garage to prime the engine and pump up the lifters. Now I have tried 10 ways form Sunday using my adjustable pushrods and/or rocker shims, and everytime I set preload .020-.030 or 1/2-3/4 turn, the valves lift slightly until the lifters bleed down. Is this a problem? I notice becasue for some reason I felt the urge to put a small flashlight to the spark plug hole and look into the port and see a little daylight from edge of the valves.
If I rotate the engine a full cam rev before they bleed down, I still see the light. If I wait a minute or so until they bleed down, I can no longer see the light, if I rev again I still can't see the light.
I got the same result on muliple rockers...
I am also curious if the thicker oil is the reason I am having this problem.
I have been told this is OK by one guy, and couple of others say the pushrod is too long, but I am watching them, and they are not bottoming out or anything. My mahcinist also said the pushrod was too long, but I'm not sure if he understood what I was trying to say.
I don't understand wether or not they will get pumped up to the point they will hold the valves open when its running or not.
Also, what do I look for on a stock type rocker as far as tip to valve contact?
My rocker tips are pretty flat, and seem to be pretty flat on the valve stem as well...
Thanks!!!
