Purpose of the headliner

I have a 56 Ford F100 big window that has a 21 inch extension on the cab. I am trying to figure out what the purpose of the headliner is? I'm wondering if I can spray some foam insulation stuff up there and then cover that with some sort of fabric? Would that be bad? Does it have to be a traditional headliner?

Thanks for any input.

Jill

The purpose of all headliners is strictly decorative, to hide the steel with something a little softer and better to look at. You will absolutely not want to spray foam insulation up there. How on earth would you smooth it out to get a decent base for the fabric? And if you did spray it up there and managed to cover it with fabric, how do you know it wouldn't let loose and fall in your lap? Also, it would squeak like a thousand mice. Headliners for your truck are not hard to find.

I'm sure you were shaking your head at me while reading...lol. I just need a little in put. The problem with finding a headliner for my truck is the extension on the cab. I don't have a whole lot of money to work with so I am just trying to think of other ways. What's a girl to do? So, the spray insulation is out and my brain starts to think again...scary! Thanks for your input.

Can you explain the extension on your cab's truck? Was this a factory thing or did somebody that's very creative modify it.?

Never mind, I just saw the picture of your truck, and your Dad is the one who modified it. This would not be hard to make a headliner board for, especially if the cab is around 48" from front to back.

That is a great link for a hard headliner, but it needs more support than I think is available in a pickup, unless the truck has a double roof.
